Fresh Vegetables
As our tagline indicates, we specialize in the food of the Italian and French countryside. We get most of our seeds from an Italian company called Franchi Sementi of Bergamo, Italy. We buy only open-pollentated varieities and all our seeds are either certified organic or are non-GMO and non-treated.
We use a raised-bed system to grow our vegetables. As a Certified Naturally Grown farm, we essentially follow the U.S.D.A Organic standards. And although we (like certified organic farms) are allowed to use certain natural pesticides that are approved for organic use, we make every attempt to avoid their use. In fact, we did not use a single pesticide in 2008.
The specific varieties grown changes from year to year, but the list below gives you a general idea of what we grow. Feel free to contact us in Spring for a final list of what is being grown.
![]() | Tomatoes We always grow a good supply of San Marzanos, the classic Italian tomato for sauce. In addition, we typically have several other Italian or French varieties, such as Dona, Carmello, and Costoluto Fiorentin. |
![]() | Peppers We deal mostly with sweet peppers. We tend to grow predominately Italian varieites that are ideal for cooking, such as Friarello, Marconi, and Topepo Rosso. |
![]() | Carrots We grow mostly French varieties as they are renowned for taste. We usually grow Chantenay, Nantes, and Juane du Doubs (a yellow carrot, very pretty). |
![]() | Lettuce We grow a fairly large selection of lettuces, most of which are available in Spring and Fall. In addition to various loose-leaf and head lettuces (such as Lolla Rossa, Merveille Quatre, and Sanguine Ameliore), we specialize in a wonderful lettuce mix that contains 6 different varieties (including arugula, tatsoi, and several others). It is a wonderfully flavorful, spicy lettuce mix. |
| | Potatoes We raise two remarkable French varieties: the French Fingerling and the La Ratte. Both are gourmet pototoes that are creamy and delicious. Both these varieties are sought after by chefs for their superior flavor.

![]() | Zucchini We specialize in Italian zucchini, particularly in those varieties the produce the best flowers for cooking (Don't tell me you have never had fried zucchini flowers?). Stuffed with goat cheese and fried in oil with a light batter - a true Italian delicacy. Not to be outdone, the marrows are absolutely delicious as well. |
![]() | Herbs We grow many of the classic European cooking herbs, including parsley, thyme, rosemary, and sage. The herbs are fresh for most of the summer, but we also dry many of them and sell them in a crushed form for use all year long. |
